Remixing the Archive explores the evolving status of digital archives in an age when technology facilitates complex modes of reuse and re-combination of preexisting objects and ideas. Join us for two days of speakers, performances, screenings, panels, presentations and workshops!

Unless otherwise noted, all events take place at the Annenberg Center for Communication, located at 734 W. Adams Blvd., just a few blocks north of the main USC campus. View a map of the event's location here.


2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD REMIX CONTEST WINNERS and INTRODUCTION TO USC DIGITAL ARCHIVE REMIX COMPETITION

USC’s Free Culture group will screen the top submissions from its Night of the Living Dead remix contest and award the first prize along with information about the Remixing the Archive contest, in which USC students are invited to create recombinant projects based on materials from USC’s digital archives.



3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
PANEL DISCUSSION: THE ROOTS AND FUTURE OF REMIX

This panel discussion brings together theorists and practitioners of remixed media to examine the historical context and ideas about the future of remix culture, tracing its roots in avant-garde filmmaking, electronic music and computational media. Panelists include Barbara Lattanzi, Anne McGuire and Aram Sinnreich and Sean Deyoe.



5:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
LIVE PERFORMANCE: PERRY HOBERMAN: LAURIE ANDERSON REMIXED

Noted media artist Perry Hoberman will perform a live, algorithmic remix of Laurie Anderson’s October 21st presentation at USC.



5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
KEYNOTE PRESENTATION: JOI ITO
EMPOWERING REMIX CULTURE THROUGH COPYRIGHT AND TECHNOLOGY


Joi Ito, the Chair of Creative Commons International and founder and CEO of Neoteny, a venture capital firm focused on personal communications and enabling technologies, discusses the intersection of technology and copyright, focusing on specific ideas regarding “what we are doing, what we can do and where we expect to go from here.”



6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
RECEPTION AND VIDEO SCREENING: BLUR + SHARPEN

A curated screening program and discussion of short films, music videos and motion graphics that spin off from the theme of remix. Featured works include Gregg Biermann’s latest computational remixes of Hollywood classics, The Sound of Music and Singin’ in the Rain.



7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
LIVE PERFORMANCE: TV SHERIFF AND THE TRAILBUDDIES

Remixing the Archive closes with the manic mayhem of the TV Sheriff, who will perform his own particular, slightly demented brand of live video remix, TV twiddling and media BBQ!
